Gnadenwald

The tiny village of Gnadenwald nestling at the foot of the Alpenpark Karwendel nature conservation park is best known for the beautiful, surrounding countryside and many sporting opportunities. The main attractions of the Karwendel are the walking and mountain tours, and of course, with a mountain bike, it is possible to fully explore the Tyrol's largest nature conservation area. The main places of scenic beauty for walkers include the Grosser Ahornboden, the Kleiner Ahornboden and the Laliderer Wände – and Gnadenwald is, of course, the perfect starting point for tours of this unique natural landscape. In the year 2000 the eagles of the Karwendel suddenly found they had competition in the skies above the valley, as the village hosted the European hang-gliding championships! Anyone wishing to experience that magnificent airborne feeling would find that Gnadenwald is the right place to be – paragliding and hang-gliding courses are among the activities on offer here. And while we're talking eagles, the Eagles' Trail (Adlerweg), the Tyrol's new footpath runs through Gnadenwald, as does the Tyrolean section of the Way of St James.

Even in winter, sports enthusiasts make the most of this cosy Tyrolean village. Ski cross-country devotees have 27 km of track to enjoy, and the ski stars of tomorrow will be in their element on the practice slope with lift and ski school / ski kindergarten. An especially family-friendly toboggan run rounds off the winter sports offering. But it's not just the natural surroundings that make a holiday in Gnadenwald such a special experience. There are numerous clubs that keep going throughout the year, and they help to provide a full and varied events calendar. One special tip: the Ski Club's Barrel Stave Race to mark the end of winter is a great spectacle. Skier's head downhill using wooden barrel planks as skis.
