Erlangen, the baroque planned town with young charm

Erlangen is considered one of the best-preserved baroque planned towns in Germany. At the heart of the city is the baroque ensemble around the Markgrafenschloss with orangery and palace garden. The new town, built from 1686 specifically for the Huguenots fleeing from France at the time, is regarded as the ideal Baroque town centre. To this day, its rectangular layout with the main street designed as a symmetrical axis forms the basic principle of the street layout in Erlangen. Small, cosy alleyways with a Mediterranean flair are characteristic of the city centre of Bavaria's smallest city.

Many bright minds have already left their mark in Erlangen. In addition to the leading commercial enterprises based in Erlangen, this is due in particular to Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg with its 30,000 students. They make the city young and dynamic. This can also be seen in the many popular street cafés, bars and restaurants in the city centre. Speaking of dynamic: a popular means of transport and omnipresent in the cityscape is the bicycle. A 380 km cycle network makes every place in Erlangen quickly and easily accessible.

Those who are drawn beyond the city limits will find themselves in a marvellous landscape. Franconian Switzerland* with its rocky natural scenery or the unique pond landscape of the Aischgründer Karpfenland are worthwhile excursions. Many cycling and hiking tours can be easily started from Erlangen. This is the perfect way to discover the enticing natural surroundings and cosy beer cellars. The Regnitz Radweg cycle path, which runs right past the gates of Erlangen, is also very popular.
