The "Karlsroute" leads along the northern edge of the Erzgebirge via Aue-Bad Schlema, Hartenstein to Chemnitz. Start at the train station in Aue and follow the Mulde downstream to Hartenstein. You cycle in the valley of the Zwickauer Mulde through the Poppenwald forest north of Aue-Bad Schlema towards Hartenstein, past the Prinzenhöhle cave, a testimony to historical events in Saxon history, to Oelsnitz/Erzgeb. The history of Saxon coal mining and miners is brought to life at this authentic location. Here you should plan a visit to the newly opened KohleWelt Oelsnitz. From Oelsnitz/Erzgeb., the "Karlsroute" shares the route with the Würschnitz Valley Cycle Route as far as Klaffenbach moated castle. The route leads along the Würschnitz through the Steegenwald forest. The outdoor pool in Jahnsdorf offers swimming fun for the whole family, while the Klaffenbach moated castle just outside Chemnitz invites you to linger. 291 million-year-old fossils such as the petrified forest await guests at the Chemnitz Natural History Museum. The "Karlsroute" ends at the main railway station in Chemnitz - the city of modernity - characterized by mechanical engineering and the textile industry.
The individual sections of the route are mostly on paved cycle paths and partly on public roads with moderate traffic, making the route suitable for families with children and touring cyclists, especially between Oelsnitz/Erzgeb. and Chemnitz along the Würschnitz. The level of difficulty of this section can be classified as "easy".
