Spital am Pyhrn is located between the Warscheneck massif and the Haller Walls at the foot of the Pyhrn Pass on the border with Styria.
The southernmost community in the Pyhrn-Priel holiday region is Spital am Pyhrn and has a lot to offer in summer and winter alike, and with Europe's fastest funicular, it also has a trump card up its sleeve at any time of the year.
Wurzeralm – Winter World & Wanderalm
With the Wurzeralm ski area, Spital am Pyhrn not only has the fastest funicular in Europe, but also a paradise for board and hiking fans of all requirements. Nestled between the Stubwies, Rote Wand and Warscheneck peaks, there are a good 20 kilometers of pistes for all ability levels to discover in winter. 8 lifts between 810 m and 1,870 m above sea level, rustic huts, a Sunny Kids Park for the ski stars of tomorrow and two valley runs make skiers' hearts beat faster. In summer, the newly created circular hiking trail "2 million years in 2 hours" starts at the mountain station, which is also accessible with a pram. The theme trail deals with the geological and ecological features of the Wurzeralm and leads around the highest raised and low moorland in the Northern Limestone Alps. A detour to the Brunnsteiner See is also worthwhile. Mountain fans can best use the ascent of the Frauenkarbahn at a good 1,800 m above sea level to scale the surrounding mountain peaks of the Warscheneck massif.
Alms & water gorges in Spital am Pyhrn
The wildly romantic rocky gorge with the doctorate “Dr. Vogelgesang-Klamm" in Spital am Pyhrn is Upper Austria's longest accessible rocky gorge and a tip for an excursion for the whole family. A good 500 steps, anchored in the vertical rock, lead through this fascinating natural spectacle of the falling water. Once at the top, alpine hikers can expect a paradise of hiking trails. Because Spital am Pyhrn is also known for its numerous hiking trails and rustic and cozy huts. For example, on the Gowilalm in Oberweng - Upper Austria's most beautiful alpine balcony - you can not only marvel at the breathtaking mountain panorama, but also enjoy the Kaiserschmarrn, which the local extreme mountaineer Gerlinde Kaltenbrunner chose as the world's best.
From the "blacksmith's trade" to the "Dom am Pyhrn"
Those interested in culture are in the truest sense of the word “golden” in Spital am Pyhrn, because the Hungarians already knew how to keep the entire gold treasure of their national bank – 33,000 kg – here at the end of the Second World War. Above all, the baroque collegiate church - the "Dom am Pyhrn" - characterizes the cultural image of the Spital am Pyhrn community. But also the double-storey, late Gothic rock church of St. Leonhard, the blacksmith shop Lindermayr as show forge, offer an extensive cultural program.
"Between heaven and earth - Gerlinde Kaltenbrunner and the world of the 8000s"
How do extreme mountaineers think and feel? What does it take to climb the highest peaks? How do the 8000s look from above? The museum "Between Heaven and Earth - Gerlinde Kaltenbrunner and the World of the 8000m" impressively tells the history of alpinism, explains the physical and psychological conditions for extreme mountaineering and the special features and phases of a high alpine expedition. In the multimedia film room you can experience extreme weather conditions - from gusts of wind to life-threatening avalanches. A 9 meter high climbing tower awaits in front of the museum. Patron of the exhibition is Gerlinde Kaltenbrunner. Born in Spital, she is the first woman to climb all 14 eight-thousanders on earth without additional oxygen.
leisure with pleasure
With the Running & Walking Arena, which offers four individual running routes, the family-friendly panoramic indoor pool, tennis courts and a high ropes course, there is more active fun on the program in Spital am Pyhrn. Numerous cross-country ski trails - whether in the valley or on one of the scenic high-altitude trails, trendy snowshoe hikes or hearty curling games are on the program away from the slopes.
