Start at the car park right at the western end of the Dürnstein tunnel. Follow the path at the banks of the Danube upstream for a few meters until you reach the point where a small alley branches off at the other side the main road. Follow this alley across the train tracks until it ends and you enter the woods in the valley. Soon the red marked "Vogelbergsteig" trail branches off to the left. Follow it steeply uphill in many U-Turns. After about 200 vertical meters the path flattens a bit and leeds northwards into somewhat exposed terrain. Some sections are secured with fixed-ropes and require some sure-footedness. This section offers magnificent views down to the Danube and Dürnstein. After about an hour you reach the end of "Vogelbergsteig" trail at an intersection. There, you can follow a yellow signpost to the left (direction "Kanzel") to a spot which once again offers good vistas.
Back at the intersection now go straight (right, if you decided not to go to "Kanzel") and follow the signposts to "Fesselhütte" hut. From the hut walk uphill for a few minutes to the top of "Schlossberg" mountain with "Starhembergwarte" observation tower on top. From there continue straight, now downhill on a well visible and green marked trail which will lead you throuh dry woods directly down to the famous "Ruine Dürnstein" ruins which are worth a visit alone. From there it is not far back down to Dürnstein village. Either take the easy road (direction "Dürnstein - Leicht") down there, or the steeper but shorter path (direction "Dürnstein - Schwierig") which contains some steps, but is not too difficult (at least compared to "Vogelbergsteig"). Down in the village head to the banks of the Danube and walk upstream to the car park.

- Schlossberg (564 m)
You can also easily do the trip starting at "Dürnstein Oberloiben" train station. From there walk to the center of Dürnstein village and then make your way down to the banks of the Danube and walk upstream to the car parking at the other side of the tunnel. From there continue as described above.
Fesslhütte hut; several restaurants in Dürnstein village.
Solid hiking boots are definitly recommended as the trails lead through rocky terrain. In addition, take a medkit, mobile phone, rain coat, food and drinks, sunscreen, and the other stuff one needs on a half-day long hike.
Medium-long and medium-difficult hike. Some sure-footedness is definately required though for "Vogelbergsteig" trail. Some sections are slightly exposed, but they are secured by fixed ropes. Not recommended for those who are afraid of heights.
