Due to its particular geomorphology, Liguria is characterised by a variety of different landscapes. Some of them are natural, but the majority is the result of human interference with the natural landscape. Due to the need to exploit as much as possible the steep slopes, over the centuries, people have worked hard to give shape to a fascinating landscape of terraces sustained by dry-stone walls built with local stones and soil. The Cinque Terre area is a particularly interesting example due to its typical wide and flat terraces (locally called “fasce”) built in centuries of human labour. The Volastra loop within the National Park of the 5 Terre allows the visitor to be deeply engaged with this particular type of agrarian landscape. It is a trail which overlooks the sea where it is possible to observe the dry-stone walls used to sustain the terraces for the vineyards.
